Descriptions:
Trade Opportunities Program (TOP)
-------------------------------------
Daily TOP reports compiled by the U.S. Department of Commerce
provide international customers for your product or service. Each
notification has details on a company or organization to aid your
trade qualification process.
The Department of Commerce compiles trade information from U.S.
Foreign Trade Consulates throughout the world and list these reports
in a text format called TOP. The TOP is issued every business day
and contains approximately 15-30 notices for Foreign Government
Tender, MTN Tender, Direct Sale to End User, Direct Sale for Resale,
Representation, Joint-Ventures and Investments.
Each card has a title that comprises of a three character month, two
digit date, and PR for Private Lead or TN for Tender. The identify
field or Hit List in ¬TextWare will list the title and the first part of
the card. This information is 70 characters long and has the file
name, country, and the remainder of the character stream.
With the addition of the SIC and HS tables in this volume, you can
search for product information by using these codes. I find checking
the same product SIC-HS description with a name search can display
some different results. Sometimes the information is coded
incorrectly and will only be displayed when using the whole word
text search.
International Marketing Insight (IMI) Reports
-------------------------------------
This segment, prepared by American embassies and consulates
abroad, provides brief reports on important new developments in a
particular country that have implications for U.S. traders and
investors. They cover such topics as new laws and trade regulations,
policies and procedures, emerging trade opportunities and more.
The IMI files are compiled by the U.S. Department of Commerce's
U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service.
Commerce Business Daily (CBD)
-------------------------------------
The Commerce Business Daily is for companies analyzing post-bid
information. The CBD provides Business News, U.S. Government
Procurements, Sources Sought, Contract Awards, Foreign Government
Standards, Surplus Property Sales, Numbered Notes, and Description
of Legend. This information will provide valuable statistics and
contact information for future government contracts. It also contains
a help text file to assist in researching specific topics in the CBD
reports.
Canada 1991 Companies for World Markets (Canadian Contacts)
-------------------------------------
Over 1,900 Canadian companies are listed within this section under
Instrumentation, Telecommunications, Geomatics, Electronic
Components, Computing Products, and Computing Serivces. Each
profile describes the company service or product, corporate profile,
and trade contact. This information will help your company take
advantage of the trade relations between Canada and the United
States.
SIC Short Title List, HS Codes, and SIC-HS Code Conversion Tables
-------------------------------------
This section has been added to help you in managing the different
coding systems. The Standard Industrial Codes (SIC) classify
industry categories which make up the composition of the economic
activities in the U.S. The Harmonized System (HS) Tariff Codes is a
worldwide standard coding system for product identification. The
conversion tables use a broad correlation criteria and incorporates
Bureau of the Census conversion data of 1987 and integrates the
1972 codes by US&FCS.
Changes in product coding from Standard Industrial Classification
Codes (SIC) to Harmonized System Codes (HS) require numeric
conversions and definition changes. To help you in managing the
different coding systems, I have included a SIC short title list, HS
Codes, and SIC-HS Code conversion tables. This information is
available in different formats for use with different PC operating
system and software programs. The basic text file for each coding
table is separated by commas. My editor has informed me that tab
separated text and popular data base formats are available for each
table. A word of caution on downloading the tables into a
spreadsheet program. Please make sure that numerical identification
is formatted properly in your cells or zeros will be deleted from
some HS codes.
STANDARD INDUSTRIAL CLASSIFICATION CODES (SIC)
-------------------------------------------------
The Standard Industrial Classification Codes (SIC) is taken from the
Office of Management and Budget "Standard Industrial Classification
Manual 1987" edition. The SIC codes classify industry categories that
make up the composition of the economic activities in the United
States.
This CD-ROM contains the Numerical List of Short Titles for the SIC in
a separate table. The official SIC titles of the divisions and the two-
digit major groups, three-digit industry groups, and four-digit
industries are those shown in the table. For various reasons,
including presentation of statistical tables, it is desirable to have a
standard list of short SIC titles so that all Government agencies may
use the same short titles for the same codes as long as the titles fit
the space requirements of the publication.
The standard short titles have been limited to 36 spaces for four-
digit industry codes and 38 spaces for two-digit major group and
three-digit industry group codes. Where a two-digit major group or
three-digit industry group contains only a single four-digit industry,
the two-digit or three-digit titles are allowed 36 rather than 38
spaces.
If the official SIC title falls within the short title space limitation
above, it is generally used without change. It is understood, of
course, that just as a title itself is not sufficient to define an industry,
so too a short title may not appear to represent the same content as
the official title. Content can only be defined by reference to the
official titles and descriptions for the relevant division, major group,
industry group, and industry.
HARMONIZED SYSTEM TARIFF (HS) CODES
--------------------------------------
This coding system for product identification is a worldwide
standard. The HS listing is from the Bureau of the Census. A
complete Harmonized Tariff Schedule book can be purchased from
the Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C..
SIC-HS CODE CONVERSION TABLE
------------------------------
The conversion table is based on Bureau of the Census conversion
data of 1987 SIC codes, plus integration of 1972 codes by US&FCS.
The conversion table uses a broad correlation criteria. Since the
Harmonized System does not include codes for services, DOC have
added the letter "S" in front of the current SIC service codes to make
these numbers into HS service codes for the agency use. You may
not wish to use these service codes.
